Scullion LAW win the national Marie Curie 2020 Fundraising Excellence Award after raising £230,000 of future income to support people in Scotland living with a terminal illness.

Legacy Ambassadors of the Year

COMMITTED TO THE COMMUNITY – Scullion LAW.

Scullion LAW exclusively run an annual free Will writing campaign in aid of Marie Curie Scotland. They
are the only law firm in Scotland to support the charity in this way and have done so successfully for
the last 6 years. In recognition of this, the community focused firm, recently won a national award for
their Fundraising Excellence after raising over £230,000 worth of future income for the charity.

Matthew Reed, CEO of Marie Curie UK s comments ‘Over the past 6 years Scullion LAW have helped
more than 1000 people across Scotland to write a Will, raising an incredible amount of future income
for Marie Curie through gifts left. I would like to thank Scullion LAW for extending their free Will
writing offer to Marie Curie colleagues, particularly during this time when their passion, love and care
have never been needed more to allow them to write or update their Wills. On behalf of Marie Curie,
a heartfelt thank you for all you do and congratulations on your well –deserved award’.

Every £20 pays for one hour of vital care for people dying from a terminal illness like cancer,
dementia, MND and Parkinson’s.

Despite a national lockdown, the lawyers successfully prepared over 300 free Wills electronically for
people living across Scotland in return for a small gift or donation to Marie Curie.

This was recently celebrated at a virtual award hosted by Marie Curie, Scotland. (VIDEO).

The Scullion LAW campaign is crucial to the success Marie Curie. The charity recently launched an
urgent appeal looking for help. In addition to this, Scullion LAW extended their services to carers
and NHS workers in Scotland as a special thanks for all they do. Over 100 key workers signed up.

Gordon Lennox Head of the Wills & Future Planning Department at Scullion LAW says ‘We are
delighted to win this fantastic award in recognition of our continued support of Marie Curie over the
last 6 years. Marie Curie are a phenomenal organisation, providing care and support throughout the
community to people with a terminal illness (not limited to cancer). It is a charity close to our hearts’.
Nicholas Scullion Managing Director of Scullion LAW ‘I am so proud of our team, especially Gordon
Lennox (Associate Director and head of the Wills & Future Planning Department), Emma Wright
(trainee) and Amelia Fraser (secretary) for their hard work in preparing the Wills. I would also like to
thank everyone who has in any way contributed to the success of this campaign including those who
clubbed together to provide the Marie Curie nurses with PPE and sanitiser at the height of the
pandemic. Our motto is One Team One Dream in times of uncertainty it is important to BE KIND’.

Urfan Dar has been promoted to Senior Associate at Scullion LAW

Scullion LAW are delighted to strengthen their court department with the internal promotion of Solicitor Advocate, Urfan Dar to Senior Associate & the hire of two external appointments.

The Criminal and Road Traffic Departments at Scullion LAW have worked tirelessly behind the scenes throughout the pandemic, delivering consistently good results for clients (despite only certain hub courts being open for business). They put a new sales process in place and are following a very tight plan which has enabled the firm to invest in and strengthen the team at a time when many of our competitors are cutting back.

Urfan is delighted to be recognised for his efforts “It has been an honour and a privilege to work with Scullion LAW this year through one of the most unusual and testing times in living memory. The team made me feel welcome from the outset and I settled in very quickly due to the affable and outgoing office environment. Working from home has presented its own challenges but the investment in people and resources has allowed the firm to deliver professional results from any location. The versatility and support has allowed the firm to flourish despite the interruption earlier in the year due to COVID-19. Notwithstanding the challenges that has presented, the team have really pulled together  to deliver an excellent service to clients and continue to represent individuals at every level in the district, sheriff and High Court. I am humbled to be recognised for my contribution in such a short and challenging space of time and welcome the endorsement of my work. I shall continue to seek to positively contribute to the success of the firm in the times ahead.”

Managing Director Nicholas Scullion quotes ‘Urfan, is a brilliant Solicitor Advocate and he has delivered significant results since joining Scullion LAW at the beginning of the year. He is a great person to work with and we are delighted to recognise his contribution to the continued success of the firm. His promotion to Senior Associate is effective from 1 October. We are all truly delighted for him and would like to thank Urfan for all the hard work he has put in whilst working from home throughout lockdown whilst supporting his young family. He is a remarkable talent with endless energy and enthusiasm. He loves the law and is passionate about delivering results for clients. He is a creative legal thinker who is honest, reliable, knowledgeable and dedicated to the pursuit of justice and equality. We are so proud that he is part of our extended Scullion LAW family. The court department is busier than ever with us all working remotely. We have expanded our reach and are being instructed by clients from Gretna to Stornoway. We look forward to finishing off the last quarter of 2020 on a high. It has otherwise been a very tough year for everyone’.

Urfan, became the first Muslim Solicitor Advocate in Scotland (2014). He has extensive experience throughout Scotland in the management, direction and presentation of High Court, sheriff and jury, and summary trials. He is recognised for his forensic attention to detail, skilled, disciplined approach and creative diversity. He is popular within his team and also with clients, as you will read from the glowing five star testimonials we have received for Urfan on review a solicitor, google, trustpilot and facebook.

In addition to this, we are happy to announce that we have secured an experienced solicitor Anna MacKay who will join us from Bridge Litigation as an Associate in early October. Anna will focus on delivering award winning service to solemn and private criminal clients.

Finally, Lucy McKenna shall join the firm as a solicitor from Paterson Bell, solicitors of Edinburgh on 4 November. Lucy is an experienced road traffic litigator and is the second generation of her family to work for the Firm as her mother, advocate, Shirley McKenna previously worked for Mr Scullion.

We would like to congratulate Urfan for his well-deserved promotion and warmly welcome Anna and Lucy to Scullion LAW. They join Patricia Barclay court secretary, Hazel Rodden court assistant, and Director Kris Buchanan, Head of the dynamic Department, to deliver our famous, award winning service to clients across the whole of Scotland.

Make a FREE Will in support of Marie Curie, NHS staff and carers.

Make a FREE Will today for peace of mind

For the last 6 years we have been working closely with Marie Curie to provide everyone with a FREE Will in return for a gift to the charity.

We have now extended this to all NHS staff and carers in Scotland.

It is so important to make the time to create a Will and forward plan.

We have been in business 40+ years and we have the knowledge, skills and experience to handle your Will (and other personal affairs) with the professionalism and dignity you deserve. You can trust in us. During lockdown our offices are closed but our team continue to work hard from home and can offer appointments via zoom, facetime and skype rather than face to face meetings.

Once your Will is complete it is one less thing to worry about – giving you peace of mind.

How do I start the process of making a Will?

We have tried to make the process as simple as possible for you. There are a variety of ways you can get started.

  1. Click here to ‘book an appointment’
  2. Or start filling out the online ‘form’ at the bottom of this page.
  3. You can also download our Wills questionnaire to review at home
  4. Or you can call our office on 0141 374 2121.

We recommend you update your Will every 3-5 years or when your personal circumstances change.

What happens if I die without making a Will?

In Scotland if you die without making a Will it is called intestate. Having no Will can cause loved ones unnecessary stress in handling your Estate during what will already be a very emotionally challenging time. It is also time consuming and costly to die without a Will and it can lead to family disputes and arguments.

It is much better to make a Will for guaranteed peace of mind.

Our friendly team at Scullion LAW are here to help you.

Why are Scullion LAW supporting Marie Curie?

For the last 6 years we have worked with Marie Curie to help them raise money for nurses caring for the terminally ill at home, and in the hospice. The nurses do an exceptional job and have cared for people close to us over the years, so it is a charity very close to our hearts. We have so far helped to raise over £155,000 of future income for the charity and completed 700 Wills but we hope in 2020 to create over 1000 and raise as much as we can with your help during these exceptional times.

Thank you for trusting in Scullion LAW.

ONLINE FAMILY LAW ADVICE AND MEDIATION: THE IMPACT OF CORONAVIRUS

Having to stay at home creates pressures on families and if you just wish to explore your options we can help.

With the Courts now dealing with only the most urgent cases, which includes child protection matters, many families will be left wondering how to deal with difficulties arising from an existing Court order or be unsure how to manage the financial and child related aspects of their separation if there are no Court proceedings. Court proceedings should always be a last resort anyway and there are alternative options open to you despite the lockdown.

When it comes to your children you will be expected to act sensibly and safely when making decisions about them.

You should follow the rules on staying at home and away from others until this advice changes. No one should be outside their home except for essential shopping, daily exercise, medical need or attending essential work.

The Government’s guidance for children whose parents do not live in the same household is that children under the age of 18 years can be moved between the parents’ homes.

The decision on whether this should happen for your children is for you to make in consultation with the children’s other parent and you need to make that decision taking into account the children’s health, the risk of infection and the presence of any vulnerable people in either household.

The best way to make that decision is for you to communicate with one another. You may have different views on what is best.

If one parent unilaterally varies a court order and this is questioned by the other parent, the Court will scrutinise that decision. If any such variation results in the other parent spending less time with the children the Court will expect alternative arrangements for contact to be made such as via FaceTime, WhatsApp, Skype, Zoom or other video calling.

If you cannot agree on what to do then one option which complies with the current Government guidance is to use online mediation. You and your partner would discuss matters with the help of a trained mediator. If you wish to take advantage of this or just wish to know more, please contact our experienced specialist Family Lawyer, Judith Higson, at Scullion LAW on judith@scullionlaw.com or call 0141 465 6318.

Even if there is no Court order, online mediation can provide couples with the means to discuss any aspect of their separation, both issues involving the children but also the financial aspects. There may be issues affecting your income which need to be addressed or you may wish to make progress with the valuation of your matrimonial property.

You might wish to have a Minute of Agreement drawn up to divide the matrimonial property.

Our specialist Family Lawyer, Judith Higson, is fully up to date with what has been a quickly changing situation this week and can provide you with pragmatic and clear advice.

If you don’t think mediation will work for you, Judith can meet with you by way of a video call to discuss your circumstances and provide you with advice and guidance on what steps to take to start the process of separating and obtaining a Divorce.

Thank you for taking time to read this article.

Here is what one other client had to say

‘ I first used scullion last when I was moving home in 2017 and having received such good service contact the family law team at scullion law when my marriage broke down Judith and the team were extremely helpful at this time and their assistance and advice in arranging my minute of agreement regarding the care of my son was invaluable. Having received such good service I contacted Judith and the family law team again to arrange my divorce for me and again I found their advice and help made the whole experience as smooth as possible. In all interactions with Judith and the family law team at scullion law I have been kept informed, updated and advised at every stage in a professional and friendly manner and I would not hesitate to recommend them’.
