Divorce Brings Emotional and Financial Costs

There is no doubt that going through a divorce or separation can be difficult for all concerned, and at such an emotionally trying time you need the support of lawyers who can provide legal solutions swiftly and effectively so that the impact on you and your family can be minimised.

At Scullion LAW we recognise that all our clients have their own individual set of circumstances, and therefore our Family Law Solicitors always deliver a personalised service in a warm and understanding way.

Costs of Divorce

One area that can be a great cause of concern to people considering divorce or separation is the potential costs involved. Some level of cost is unavoidable when taking professional legal advice, but at Scullion LAW we strive to keep this to a minimum and will give you a clear estimate of expected costs right at the start of our relationship with you.

However, recent research has highlighted that divorce can prove costly for couples in other ways, and we would like to share these findings with you so that you are as prepared as possible for the potential financial implications of divorce or separation.

The research, which was conducted by Aviva, found that a majority (68%) of couples who divorce or separate find they have financial issues that need resolving. On average, this takes around 14.5 months.

The types of costs couples most commonly encounter when dealing with the end of a relationship include legal fees, mentioned by 54% of couples, setting up a new home (40%) and annual child maintenance payments (21%).

Finding Alternative Accommodation

The research highlights that the breakdown of a relationship will usually affect where people live afterwards and their ability to get back on the housing ladder after selling a shared property. Therefore, the costs and practicalities of setting up a new home are issues that need consideration.

Aviva found that almost half (46%) of home-owning couples sell their property after a split, which means that both partners have to find a new home, as do those individuals who move out while their partner remains in the former joint home.

One in six (16%) buy a new home following separation, with an average cost of £144,600 per person. Renting appears to be a more common outcome, at least initially, with 51% moving to the rental market at the end of a relationship and spending an average of £7,519 each year on rent.

However, 16% of separated couples find they cannot afford to move out at all and so have to remain living together in the same house.

Drop in Income

The research also found evidence that many people need to make changes to supplement a potential drop in household income as a result of divorce or separation.

Nearly one in three (31%) of those who have split say they have dipped into their savings for financial support, while over a quarter (26%) admit using credit cards for this reason. Close to a quarter (23%) have also borrowed from friends and family to tide them over.

The facts and figures quoted in this article are undoubtedly daunting for many people, but it is important to remember that every situation is different, and Scullion LAW will always work tirelessly to achieve the best possible outcome for you.
